What’s a Tiny Saint???

If you have children or teens as a Catholic these days, you have seen the “tiny saints.” To describe them I believe the Arlington Catholic Herald did a good job, “Small, colorful plastic Catholic saints can be seen hanging from key chains, zippers, and backpacks alongside Hello Kitty and Pokémon.” (Check out the full article with their story HERE.)

Our family discovered these a while back as well and they have been a staple for family events and gifts ever since.

A few examples include:

  • St. Andrew, St. Joseph, and Sts. Louis and Zélie Martin hanging on my badge at work and my backpack during work travels.

  • St. Elizabeth of Hungary, St. Tarcisius, St. Cecilia, and many others as confirmation and/or first communion gifts.

  • Bl. Pier Giorgio Frassati, the outdoorsman and adventurer, hanging on my hat during a 65 mile Boy Scout canoe trip with my son.

  • Special gifts of St. Peregrine, for someone with cancer, Our Lady Undoer of Knots, for someone struggling with a particular problem, St. Patrick, for those attending a retreat, and many others.

  • St. Francis of Assisi, hanging on our dogs’ collars.

SOS just helped celebrated the first Bl. Stanley Rother Feast Day mass (July 28) in Houston. This event we hope to be an annual event around the Houston area and in his honor, we are bringing you the Bl. Stanley Rother tiny saint.

Stanley Rother came from a hard-working Oklahoma farm family. In 1968, five years into his priesthood, Father Rother requested reassignment to rural Guatemala. There he served the poor, translated Scripture, and taught via radio, but Guatemalan Catholics were being killed amid a civil war. Father Rother, knowing the risks, believed that "the shepherd cannot run.” On July 28, 1981, men snuck into his home and shot the holy priest.
